Brazil launches national research centre for low-carbon hydrogen to boost green transition

The US$10 million investment aims to link science and industry ahead of COP30 in Belem

Brazil has taken a step in its energy transition with the launch of a national research centre dedicated to low-carbon hydrogen. The initiative, announced by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), will receive an investment of about US$10 million to develop sustainable technologies and strengthen ties between scientific research and industry.

The new Centre of Competence will be funded by the National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development (FNDCT) as part of the government’s wider strategy to expand the green economy, reports Brasil 247, a partner of TV BRICS.

MCTI Minister Luciana Santos highlighted the centre’s importance in the run-up to the 2025 UN Climate Conference (COP30), to be hosted in Belem. She stressed that “there is no way to tackle the climate crisis without science and public investment.”

The centre will support public and private research institutions with proven experience in applied industrial research. It will focus on developing technologies for the production, storage and safe use of low-emission hydrogen across sectors such as steelmaking, transport, cement, fertilisers and power generation.

According to officials, hydrogen is a key pillar of the global energy transition and could transform Brazil’s industrial base.
