China expands global reach of bamboo industry with rising exports
Growing international demand highlights the role of bamboo products in sustainable trade and green development
Under the spring season, bamboo production is intensifying in Yunnan Province, where local enterprises are increasing exports to neighbouring markets. Recent shipments of bamboo furniture and products have successfully passed customs at the China–Vietnam border, reflecting growing demand in regional trade, as reported by Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.
Producers in Daguan County have reported steady orders from Vietnam since early 2025. According to local industry representatives, export revenues have reached approximately US$272 thousand over the past three years, underscoring the sector’s expanding international presence.
The region benefits from favourable natural conditions, positioning it as a key bamboo production base. By 2025, planting areas in Daguan County reached 68,000 hectares, while total industrial output exceeded about US$453.9 million. Nationwide, China maintains nearly 8 million hectares of bamboo forests, with annual production of around 150 million tonnes and an industry value surpassing approximately US$76.1 billion.
China continues to promote bamboo as an alternative to wood and plastic, supporting environmental sustainability and reducing carbon emissions. The country’s extensive resource base and technological capabilities have enabled the development of more than 15,000 types of bamboo products, strengthening its role in global green supply chains.
In Anji County, which is recognised as a major bamboo production hub, industry output exceeded around US$2.9 billion in 2025. Local manufacturers are expanding product lines, including tableware, packaging and household items, with exports reaching nearly 110 countries and regions. The growing adoption of bamboo-based solutions reflects increasing global interest in sustainable materials and circular economy practices.
