Russia launches first forest-climate project in Arctic

It covers an area of 20.7 thousand hectares

The first forest-climate project in the Russian Arctic has been launched in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (YaNAO). The initiative aims to develop carbon monitoring and forest restoration, reports Xinhua, a TV BRICS partner, citing the Project Office for Arctic Development.

“The main objectives of the project are to highlight the methodology of climate projects for Arctic territories and to stimulate the liquidity of such projects on the international market,” said Maksim Dankin, Director General of the Project Office for Arctic Development.

He noted that the success of the initiative could attract investment in Russian climate projects and become a new source of funding for the regions.

The project provides for the establishment of a natural and climatic testing ground for forest restoration and the organisation of a carbon monitoring system. The work includes tree planting, remote observation, and soil research.

It is noted that such initiatives enhance the capacity of forests to absorb greenhouse gases. Earlier, Russia set a goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
