India to launch electric ferry services in 2025

Mumbai is poised for a transformative shift in marine transportation as electric ferry services are set to commence between the city and Jawaharlal Nehru Port in January 2025. This is reported by Trinity Mirror, a partner of TV BRICS.

These cutting-edge ferries promise faster, more comfortable, and environmentally friendly travel, reducing the journey time to just 30-40 minutes – up to 20 minutes faster than current ferry services.

The new ferries feature air-conditioned seating, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience for passengers. This initiative is a key component of the Indian government’s Green Port programme under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, aimed at achieving net-zero emissions by 2047 and boosting the share of renewable energy in port operations to 60 per cent. 

As part of the broader Green Port vision, the introduction of electric ferries represents a new step towards reducing the environmental impact of marine transport and advancing renewable energy solutions.

Constructed using advanced fibre-reinforced polymer materials, these 12-metre-long ferries are designed for durability and efficiency. They can reach speeds of up to 12 knots and accommodate 20 to 24 passengers per trip.

Passengers will enjoy a hassle-free experience with an intuitive online ticketing system and seamless check-in processes. By enhancing connectivity between Mumbai and the port, these electric ferries are expected to drive growth in both trade and tourism across the region.

Launching in January 2025, these modern, eco-friendly ferries are set to revolutionise urban mobility in Mumbai, offering passengers a swift, comfortable, and sustainable travel option.
