Indonesia is strengthening its position in the global sports tourism market with the launch of the Geopark Run Series 2026–2027, a nationwide initiative designed to combine athletic events, sustainable tourism and the promotion of the country's unique geological heritage.

The programme will take place across four of Indonesia’s internationally recognised geoparks and forms part of a broader strategy to diversify tourism offerings, stimulate regional economic development and enhance the country's global profile as a destination for nature-based travel, reports VNA, a partner of TV BRICS.

Officials describe the initiative as more than a sporting competition. The series is intended to showcase Indonesia’s geological landscapes, encourage environmentally responsible tourism and create new economic opportunities for local communities through increased visitor spending and tourism-related activities.

The Geopark Run Series will be held between August 2026 and April 2027 in four UNESCO-recognised geoparks: Ijen Geopark, Minangkabau Geopark, Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu Geopark and Belitong Geopark.

Authorities expect the running series to attract at least 10,000 athletes and visitors, generating increased demand for accommodation, transport services, food businesses and local products. The initiative is also expected to support small enterprises and community-based tourism projects in host regions.
