Iran begins mass production of domestically built metro trains

By the end of the year, two 7-car train sets are expected to join Tehran’s metro network

Iran has launched the mass production line for its national metro trains, marking a new step towards self-sufficiency in urban transportation, as reported by Iran Press, a partner of TV BRICS.

This milestone follows the successful testing earlier this year of the first fully domestically manufactured metro train. After extensive evaluations, including a 5,000-kilometre test run and expert feedback, the train was deemed ready for mass production.

Hossein Afshin, Iranian Vice President for Science, Technology, and Knowledge-Based Economy, highlighted that this achievement is the result of over a decade of development and strategic investment in domestic industries. A government-backed budget of US$30 million, supplemented by Tehran Municipality, has accelerated the project’s progress.

By the end of the year, two 7-car train sets are expected to join Tehran’s metro network, improving capacity and efficiency. Additionally, plans for a second phase are already underway, which include the construction of a 5-car train specifically designed for Isfahan, Tabriz, and Mashhad.

This second project, awarded to a domestic engineering firm, marks a pioneering effort in local train manufacturing, with risks mitigated through the government’s scientific and technological support.
