Iran ranks eighth globally in silk thread production

Tehran highlights potential for expanded cooperation with Uzbekistan in the silk value chain

Iran has secured the eighth position worldwide in silk thread production, according to the latest statistics from the International Sericulture Commission. The announcement was made during a specialised meeting with a delegation from Uzbekistan’s Silk Industry Union, where Iranian officials emphasised the country’s long-standing heritage in sericulture. This is reported by Mehr News Agency , a partner of TV BRICS.

Authorities noted that national agricultural policies include support for silkworm breeding, mulberry cultivation, and related industries. Measures such as distributing improved silkworm eggs and mulberry saplings at subsidised rates, alongside research, training, and technological promotion, are being implemented to strengthen the sector. Iran has also achieved self-sufficiency in producing hybrid silkworm eggs.

Officials stressed the importance of knowledge exchange, joint training programmes, and mutual visits between Iran and Uzbekistan to expand expertise in sericulture and the wider silk value chain. A delegation from Uzbekistan is expected to participate in joint educational initiatives in Iran next year.

Highlighting the economic potential of silk, Iranian representatives underlined the need to attract private investment and facilitate trade in cocoons, silk threads, and finished silk products. The long-term goal is to create sustainable opportunities for both nations through strengthened collaboration in this historic yet forward-looking industry.
