Iran’s thermal power generation reaches all-time high

Combined-cycle plants boost efficiency amid renewable energy push

Iran’s thermal power facilities achieved unprecedented electricity output in the 12-month period ending in late March, surpassing 350 million megawatt-hours (MWh) amid growing domestic energy needs.

These facilities, which supply 94 per cent of Iran’s electricity, saw a 2.2 per cent rise in output from combined-cycle plants, reaching 202 million MWh. Gas-powered units contributed 67 million MWh, marking a 4.4 per cent increase, while steam-based plants produced 82 million MWh, as reported by Press TV, a partner of TV BRICS.

In recent years, Iran has prioritised modernising its gas-fired stations by integrating combined-cycle technology, which recaptures waste heat to boost efficiency.

Thermal plants still dominate the grid, constituting 84 per cent of generation capacity and relying on natural gas for 80 per cent of their fuel. He added that Iran ranks 16th globally in installed power capacity, which has grown 13-fold since 1979 to over 94.5 gigawatts (GW).
