Ethiopian food production initiative boosts honey production

Ethiopia’s Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, highlighted that the country’s flagship environmental programme, the Green Legacy Initiative, is extending its impact beyond ecological restoration to become a vital catalyst for the national beekeeping sector, boosting honey production across the country.

In a message posted on social media, the Prime Minister explained how this multi-year environmental campaign is actively fostering a thriving ecosystem that directly benefits local agricultural yields, according to ENA, a partner of TV BRICS.

"The Green Legacy Initiative, beyond its fundamental role in climate action, is now generating real gains in Ethiopia’s honey production," said Abiy, noting that protecting the natural environment is expanding forests and, with them, the habitat and food sources that sustain bee populations and boost honey harvests.

This announcement coincides with the start of the planting season for the Green Legacy Initiative 2026, officially launched earlier this month by the Prime Minister under the slogan "Let Us Plant Hope".

For this year’s annual campaign during the rainy season, the nation has set itself the ambitious target of planting 8,000 million seedlings.

Since its inception in 2019, the initiative has successfully mobilised millions of citizens to plant over 48,000 million saplings, which has helped to expand Ethiopia’s forest cover over the past seven years.
