The Zimbabwean authorities have announced that they will support the use of new high-yield hybrid cotton seeds to develop the sector and boost smallholders’ incomes. This was reported by The Herald, a partner of TV BRICS.

The article notes that the average yield among smallholder farmers is around 0.5 tonnes per hectare, and the main focus is now on improving the quality of seed stock and expanding access to modern agricultural technologies. A local company has introduced new hybrid seeds which, according to the company, can yield up to 5 tonnes of cotton per hectare.

The government plans to utilise existing farmer support programmes, including the presidential programme for the supply of agricultural resources, to ensure access to new technologies.

The company also announced plans to expand local production – to 100 tonnes of hybrid seeds as early as this year, with a subsequent increase in volume.

The authorities and industry representatives note that the introduction of new technologies creates the conditions for sustainable growth in cotton production and strengthens the country’s position in the agricultural sector.
