Malaysia’s Port Klang breaks into top 10 busiest container ports globally

Malaysia has marked a new milestone in the maritime sector as Port Klang entered the ranks of the world’s ten busiest container ports for the first time, as reported by BERNAMA, a partner of TV BRICS. 

According to the Ministry of Transport, Port Klang has steadily advanced in recent years, moving from 13th place in 2022 to 11th in 2023 before securing its top-10 position in 2025. Officials said the rise reflects sustained investment in infrastructure and capacity-building to meet the demands of international trade. 

Expansion projects include the development of new terminals that will double handling capacity by 2028, as well as upgrades to existing facilities to accommodate larger vessels and higher cargo volumes.  A long-term mega project at Carey Island is also expected to raise capacity to 30 million 20-foot equivalent container units (TEU) annually by 2060. 

Alongside Port Klang’s success, the Port of Tanjung Pelepas retained its position among the world’s top 20, with throughput climbing to 12.25 million TEUs in 2024, a 16.9 per cent rise on 2023. 

The Ministry of Transport emphasised that, combined, the two ports have propelled Malaysia to become the fifth largest container-handling nation globally in 2024, reinforcing the country’s strategic role along the Strait of Malacca, the world’s busiest shipping lane.
