Brazil to build 120 new airports by 2026
This is part of the first phase of the Universalisation of Air Transport Programme
Brazil's Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, announced on Monday, December 18, the first phase of the Universalisation of Air Transport Programme to reduce airfares and operating costs in Brazil by 2024.
Among the three main measures announced, Costa Filho named the construction of 120 new airports in Brazil by 2026. The Minister highlighted the work being done by the National Civil Aviation Agency in Brazil. "By 2026, private investment will amount to more than 6 billion reais (110.1 billion rubles) and in the next three to four years we want to build, together with private and public entities, another 120 new airports in the country - more contemporary and modernised," he said.
“We will be able to build more than 10 new airports in the Amazon. We want to create another 30-40 new airports in the North East and modernise them. We hope that by January, by early February at the latest, together with the TCU (Federal Court of Auditors) we will be able to launch this programme, which will bring together the largest amount of investment in the history of the country. These investments will make a difference not only for entertainment tourism, but also for business tourism and to help Brazilian healthcare," the minister added.
Costa Filho also noted that the country is working on reducing the price of jet fuel, which accounts for about 36% of the cost of airline tickets in Brazil. According to the minister, Brazil's largest oil and gas company has reduced the price of a litre of fuel in 2023 by 19% compared to the price in 2022.
