Chinese scientists develop innovative biomimetic hand prosthesis

The device can imitate 33 standard grip types and perform complex movements

Researchers from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) have introduced a biomimetic hand prosthesis capable of executing intricate movements, including sign language, handling scissors, using a smartphone, and combing hair. This was reported by China Daily, a partner of TV BRICS.

According to the publication, the key feature of the device is its high degree of mobility. The prosthesis weighs 370 grams, which is lighter than a human hand, yet it possesses 19 active degrees of freedom (the number of movements an artificial limb can perform). Its construction incorporates shape-memory alloys, enabling the hand to move as naturally as possible.

Additionally, the device is equipped with 23 sensors for precise control. It also supports voice commands in 60 languages with high recognition accuracy.

During trials, a 60-year-old patient mastered the prosthesis within just a few hours and successfully passed functional hand tests.

According to scientists, this development opens new possibilities not only in prosthetics but also in robotics, medicine, and industry. In particular, the device could be utilised in complex environments, including nuclear facility maintenance, deep-sea operations, and high-precision manufacturing processes.
