Ethiopia approves digital development strategy through 2030

The country’s authorities aim to create one million jobs in the digital sector and increase its contribution to the economy

The Government of Ethiopia has officially presented the national strategy Digital Ethiopia 2030, which is intended to become the next stage of the country’s technological transformation. Its main goals are to improve digital literacy among the population and civil servants, as well as to stimulate entrepreneurship. This was reported by Fana Media Corporation, a partner of TV BRICS.

According to the plan, by 2030, 70 per cent of Ethiopia’s population should achieve digital literacy. At the same time, 80 per cent of civil servants will be trained in digital skills, and 10 million citizens will undergo formal training in this field. The authorities expect the sector to create 1 million new jobs and to account for 12 per cent of national GDP.

Another objective is to support 5,000 existing start-ups. The strategy is aimed at attracting foreign investment and creating an ecosystem for the sustainable development of the digital economy.

The programme builds on the previous initiative, Digital Ethiopia 2025. At present, as part of its implementation, digital services for civil registration and local residence registration have been introduced, and around 58,000 taxpayers are using the electronic filing system.

The strategy also includes the development of a unified digital infrastructure, strengthening cybersecurity, and ensuring interoperability of government information systems.
