Ethiopia focuses on electric vehicles as part of transition to green economy

The announcement came during a half-day meeting in Addis Ababa where a strategy for the introduction of electric vehicles was endorsed

Ethiopia's Transport and Logistics Minister Alemu Sime said the widespread use of electric vehicles (EVs) instead of traditional internal combustion engine vehicles is a key element of the strategy to build a green economy and combat climate change. This is reported by ENA, a partner of TV BRICS.

The Minister emphasised that the transport sector plays an important role in shaping the green economy and noted the need to actively use electric vehicles.

According to him, Ethiopia spends US$4 billion annually on fuel procurement. Switching to renewable energy sources would not only reduce air pollution but also redirect significant funds freed up from fuel costs to infrastructure development.

The approved strategy includes a ban on imports of second-hand vehicles with internal combustion engines, incentivising imports of electric vehicles, converting existing fuel-powered vehicles to electric vehicles, and setting up a network of charging stations.
