The Tamil Nadu state government has approved the creation of five new Renewable Energy Zones, a key administrative reform aimed at strengthening the sector and streamlining the implementation of wind and solar projects.
The reorganisation replaces the former circular offices to make them more efficient and investor-friendly, in line with the government’s goal of accelerating the clean energy transition, according to Trinity Mirror, a partner of TV BRICS.
The Minister for Energy Resources and Law, Nirmal Kumar, emphasised that this measure will not only boost renewable generation capacity and optimise services for investors but will also support strategic initiatives such as battery storage systems.
Under the new structure, deputy executive engineers will lead the management, monitoring and implementation of projects, and additional responsibilities have been created at the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board headquarters in Chennai to strengthen oversight. This will significantly reduce approval times and improve key services such as technical re-evaluation, grid infrastructure coordination and the one-stop shop for investors.
With this reform, Tamil Nadu aims to make decisive progress towards its ambitious goal of substantially increasing renewable energy production by 2030, consolidating its position as a leader in India’s energy transition.
