Young participants embark on a 10-day educational voyage to the geographic North Pole, promoting scientific collaboration, Arctic research and global cultural exchange
A major international scientific and educational expedition has officially begun in Murmansk, bringing together school students from 22 countries for a unique 10-day mission to the geographic North Pole aimed at inspiring the next generation of global scientists and researchers.
The "Icebreaker of Knowledge" expedition unites students aged 14 to 16 from countries including India, China and Russia, as reported by ANI, a TV BRICS partner. Participants departed from Murmansk aboard an icebreaker and will travel to 90° north latitude, one of the world's most remote locations, where they will take part in science-focused educational activities and Arctic research programmes.
The initiative is designed to strengthen international cooperation in science education while giving young participants first-hand experience of the rapidly changing Arctic environment. Throughout the voyage, students will explore topics including polar ecosystems, climate science, geography and sustainable development while collaborating with peers from around the world.
Each participating country selected a single student through a competitive multi-stage national process, ensuring representation from a diverse range of educational backgrounds and fostering cross-cultural exchange during the expedition.
Representing India is Lucky Rawat, a student from the northern state of Uttarakhand, who described the expedition as a unique opportunity to serve as his country's ambassador while visiting one of the world's most remote locations.
"I am from Chakrata in Uttarakhand and have come here as India's ambassador for this expedition. It is a 10-day expedition during which we will travel to the North Pole. We will be among the very few people who have actually reached the North Pole," Rawat said before the departure.
Organisers say the programme aims to encourage greater interest in science, technology and environmental research by providing participants with direct exposure to one of the planet's most scientifically significant regions. The expedition also seeks to raise awareness of the Arctic's growing importance in climate research and international scientific cooperation.
As the mission progresses toward the North Pole, participants will engage in educational workshops, collaborative projects and discussions intended to build lasting international connections while developing leadership and research skills among future generations of scientists.
