China sees rapid rise in technology tourism as innovation becomes new driver of inbound travel

Foreign visitors are increasingly choosing immersive technology experiences over traditional sightseeing, signalling the emergence of a fast-growing tourism segment that supports China's expanding service economy

China is witnessing the rapid emergence of technology tourism as a new pillar of inbound travel, with growing numbers of international visitors travelling to experience the country's advances in artificial intelligence, robotics, smart manufacturing and digital innovation rather than focusing solely on its traditional cultural attractions. This is reported by Global Times, a TV BRICS partner.

The trend is gaining momentum as China's latest national development strategy places greater emphasis on expanding the service sector and creating higher-value tourism experiences. Industry observers say technology-focused travel is evolving from a niche interest into a recognised tourism category that combines innovation, education and business engagement.

Instead of visiting conventional tourist landmarks alone, overseas travellers are increasingly exploring innovation hubs, advanced manufacturing centres and interactive technology exhibitions where they can experience emerging technologies in everyday environments. Artificial intelligence applications, autonomous systems, smart mobility, robotics and next-generation consumer technologies have become major attractions for international visitors seeking first-hand insight into China's technological development.

Officials and industry experts believe the country's integrated manufacturing ecosystem and rapid commercialisation of new technologies are helping distinguish China from other destinations. Visitors are able to observe how advanced technologies move quickly from research into large-scale production and practical public use, offering experiences that are difficult to replicate elsewhere.

The growing popularity of technology-focused travel is also reshaping the wider tourism economy. Beyond visits to innovation centres, the trend is generating increased demand for accommodation, transport, guided experiences, exhibitions, educational programmes and business exchanges, extending visitor spending across multiple service industries.

Analysts expect technology tourism to become one of the fastest-growing segments of China's inbound travel market over the coming years, reflecting rising global interest in experiencing technological innovation through immersive, real-world environments rather than digital demonstrations alone.
