New survey shows growing demand for environmentally responsible tourism, off-season travel and improved public transport as Vietnam strengthens its sustainable tourism agenda

Vietnam is witnessing a significant shift in travel habits as sustainability becomes a defining factor in tourism choices. A new international survey indicates that most Vietnamese travellers now consider responsible tourism an essential part of their journeys, reflecting the country's broader efforts to balance economic growth with environmental protection and community development.
The study, conducted across 35 countries and territories, found that 76 per cent of Vietnamese respondents view tourism as a major contributor to national economic growth. This is reported by VNA, a TV BRICS partner.
At the same time, travellers are placing greater emphasis on the social and environmental impact of their trips. 85 per cent of respondents said sustainable travel is a priority, while the same proportion expressed a desire to make a positive contribution to the destinations they visit.
One of the emerging trends is a growing preference for travelling outside peak holiday periods. Around 35 per cent of Vietnamese travellers said they intentionally avoid the busiest seasons, helping to ease pressure on popular destinations while supporting more stable year-round income for local businesses and communities.
Transport is also becoming an increasingly important element of sustainable tourism. Nearly half of respondents (48 per cent) believe that expanding public transport options would make travel more environmentally friendly and accessible.
Walking, cycling and using urban public transport systems in major cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are increasingly viewed as practical ways to reduce emissions while allowing visitors to experience local culture more authentically. Traditional forms of transport, including cyclo rides through historic districts, also continue to support cultural heritage and local livelihoods.
The findings suggest that sustainable tourism in Vietnam is evolving from a niche concept into a mainstream travel priority. As visitors become more conscious of their environmental and social impact, responsible travel is increasingly recognised as a way to protect destinations while supporting long-term economic and community development.
