Indonesia expands wellness tourism strategy to strengthen global travel competitiveness

Government aims to attract high-value visitors through sustainable wellness experiences and longer tourist stays

Indonesia is accelerating the development of its wellness tourism sector as part of a broader strategy to enhance the country's international competitiveness and attract higher-value travellers, as reported by ANTARA.

The Ministry of Tourism is building a comprehensive wellness tourism ecosystem that focuses on improving destinations, raising service standards, encouraging product innovation, expanding investment opportunities, strengthening promotional activities and developing skilled tourism professionals.

Officials believe wellness tourism will become one of the country's fastest-growing travel segments, supporting a transition towards higher-quality and more sustainable tourism. Unlike traditional sightseeing, wellness-focused travel encourages visitors to spend more time at destinations while participating in health, relaxation and experience-based activities, contributing to increased tourism revenue.

The strategy also positions wellness tourism as an important complement to sports tourism, outdoor experiences and destination-based travel, creating broader opportunities for regional tourism development.

According to official tourism data, wellness-related activities accounted for 13.35 per cent of international visitor arrivals in 2024, highlighting the growing demand for health and wellbeing experiences among overseas travellers.

Global industry forecasts also point to strong long-term growth. The worldwide wellness tourism market generated an estimated US$6.8 trillion in economic activity in 2024 and is projected to reach US$9.75 trillion by 2029, reflecting rising consumer interest in preventive health, holistic wellbeing and sustainable travel.

Indonesia is already recognised as Southeast Asia's largest wellness economy, providing a strong foundation for further expansion of wellness-focused tourism products and services.

The government's strategy places particular emphasis on attracting Millennial and Generation Z travellers, whose travel preferences increasingly prioritise unique experiences, wellbeing, sporting activities and cultural engagement alongside traditional tourism.

By strengthening wellness tourism infrastructure and expanding experience-led travel offerings, Indonesia aims to increase visitor spending, encourage longer stays and reinforce its position as one of Asia's leading destinations for sustainable and high-value tourism.
