Ethiopia plans to set record and export 600 thousand tonnes of coffee

Ethiopia plans to set a new record for coffee exports in the current financial year. It is expected that the volume of supplies will reach 600 thousand tonnes, and revenues will exceed US$3 billion. This was stated by the country’s Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh, reports Fana Media Corporation (FMC), a TV BRICS partner.

This figure exceeds the results of the previous financial year, when 470 thousand tonnes of coffee worth US$2.65 billion were exported.

To achieve its goals, Ethiopia is implementing a comprehensive programme to modernise the coffee industry. Over the past seven years, more than 9 billion coffee trees have been planted, and over 700 thousand hectares of existing plantations have been renewed.

The average coffee yield in Ethiopia is currently 6–9 quintals per hectare. However, advanced farms demonstrate higher results – 15–20 quintals per hectare. On experimental plots using modern technologies, it is possible to achieve 60 quintals per hectare.

According to the International Coffee Organisation (ICO) report for October 2025, exports of Ethiopian coffee have already increased by 27.3 per cent in the 2024/25 coffee year compared with the previous one, reaching 7.37 million 60-kilogram bags. This growth became possible thanks to a record harvest – 9.91 million bags.

In addition to increasing production volumes, the Ethiopian authorities are focusing on improving the quality of the final product and increasing its added value. The country is also considering the development of tea cultivation as a promising area for diversifying the agricultural sector.
