Ethiopia secures US$120 million from meat exports
Export volume rises by over 50% as livestock sector benefits from improved breeds, training, and market expansion
Ethiopia generated US$120 million from the export of meat and animal by-products in the last Ethiopian fiscal year, according to the Ethiopian Livestock Development Institute (LDI).
Asrat Tera, Director General of the Institute, attributed the strong performance to sustained efforts aimed at improving livestock productivity and export competitiveness. These efforts include the development of better animal breeds, expanded professional training, and stringent quality control measures. This is reported by ENA, a partner of TV BRICS.
Asrat highlighted that Ethiopia currently exports 21 different types of offal – such as liver, heart, kidney, and tongue – alongside meat.
He reported that more than 22,620 tonnes of meat and by-products were exported during the fiscal year, representing a 53 per cent increase over the previous year.
Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates remain Ethiopia’s top destinations for meat and offal exports.
The Director General noted that current efforts are focused on maintaining high standards, improving animal health, and expanding access to international markets.
