India launches its first pilot project for underground coal gasification

The initiative aims to revolutionise the coal industry by converting coal into valuable gases

At the Kasta coal block in Jamtara District, Jharkhand, the Indian Ministry of Coal has started the nation's first-ever Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) pilot project. This is reported by ANI, a partner of TV BRICS.

The goal of this research is to use in-situ gasification to transform coal into useful gases, including carbon dioxide, hydrogen, methane and carbon monoxide.

These gases are used in many different industrial processes, such as the synthesis of synthetic natural gas, fertilisers, and chemical feedstocks for fuels.

Starting on June 22, 2024, the first phase comprised well drilling and sample testing for a feasibility assessment. Pilot coal gasification will be the main topic of the second phase.

The project's primary goal is to provide new guidelines for the use of coal resources.
