Iran increases renewable energy capacity 2.5 times in 18 months

Iran has increased its installed renewable energy capacity by 157 per cent over the past 18 months. According to the Iranian Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Organisation, by the end of November 2025 it reached 3,165 megawatts. This was reported by Tehran Times, a partner of TV BRICS.

The leader in green capacity is Markazi Province (459 megawatts), followed by Isfahan (395 megawatts) and Yazd (326 megawatts). The main wind power hub is Qazvin Province, with a capacity of 164.4 megawatts.

Currently, more than 600 new renewable energy projects are underway in the country. They are planned to be commissioned by the end of September 2026.

The growth is attributed to a range of government measures, including loans for the construction of solar power plants and new regulations for industrial, mining and agricultural enterprises allowing them to build their own renewable energy facilities directly in the distribution network, as well as the development of educational programmes in this field.

According to estimates, the installed capacity has already saved 29 billion litres of water and 30 billion cubic metres of fuel and prevented 65 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
