Iran launches pilot project for helium extraction and purification
Iran has initiated a pilot project to extract and purify helium from natural gas for the first time, marking a strategic advancement in the country's energy and scientific capabilities. This is reported by Mehr News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.
The initiative aims at reducing Iran’s reliance on imports and positioning the country among the few nations capable of producing purified helium. Following the completion of the pilot phase, Iran plans to establish its first full-scale production facility, strengthening both domestic supply and export potential.
Developed in collaboration with an Iranian university, the project utilises domestically engineered components and equipment, showcasing Iran’s technical expertise in the field, the source claims. The initiative aligns with a broader roadmap devised with the Oil Ministry to scale up production capacity.
Beyond meeting national demand, Iran aims to enter the global helium market, leveraging its reserves for economic growth within the framework of a knowledge-based economy. The long-term strategy includes expanding production capabilities and exploring export opportunities to secure a share in the international helium trade.
