Lula da Silva joins CELAC Summit in Honduras

Regional bloc debates trade policies and strengthened cooperation

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva arrived in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, to participate in the IX CELAC Summit, where leaders from 33 Latin American and Caribbean nations will discuss regional cooperation, trade policies, and the upcoming selection of the next UN Secretary-General. The meeting will address key initiatives, including food security programmes and disaster relief funding.

CELAC members are expected to coordinate on a unified candidate for UN leadership, as reported by Metropoles, a partner of TV BRICS. Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira emphasised that the CELAC countries should work together on issues important to the region.

The Brazilian government expects the selected nominee to be a woman. Ambassador Gisela Maria Figueiredo Padovan, Secretary of Latin America and the Caribbean, stated that, under the regional rotation system, Latin America and the Caribbean should rightfully assume the position. She added that Brazil is proposing a joint effort among member countries to support a single candidate, which would increase the chances of upholding the rotation principle.
