Brazil to build nitrogen fertiliser plant by 2029
The authorities have described the project as a step towards strengthening the country’s sovereignty and reducing its dependence on imported raw materials
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has announced the start of construction of a nitrogen fertiliser plant in the municipality of Tres Lagoas, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. As reported by Brasil de Fato, a partner of TV BRICS.
The plant will produce 3,600 tonnes of granular urea and 2,200 tonnes of ammonia per day, which will partially meet domestic demand for fertilisers.
The project involves an investment of over US$963 million. Production is scheduled to commence in 2029. During the construction phase, the project is expected to create around 8,000 direct and indirect jobs.
The project is part of Brazil’s national investment programme, the PAC (Programa de Aceleracao do Crescimento) – the Growth Acceleration Programme.
According to government figures, Brazil currently imports around 85 per cent of the fertilisers it uses. In this regard, the country’s president emphasised that the plant construction project forms part of a strategy to develop domestic production and reduce dependence on external resources. He expressed the hope that, in future, Brazil would produce more than 70 per cent of its required fertilisers domestically.
Speaking at the project’s launch ceremony, Lula da Silva highlighted the importance of redistributing federal funds to the states and local authorities, stating that the country’s development depends on strengthening its cities. He added that the revival of infrastructure and housing programmes is among the key policy priorities.
The president also linked economic development to the expansion of technical and university education. According to him, improving the country’s competitiveness depends on training qualified specialists in fields such as engineering, mathematics, physics, and technology.
