Russia strengthens position as Brazil’s leading diesel supplier

Brazil expands energy cooperation and introduces measures to support fuel market stability

Brazil has significantly increased diesel imports from Russia in recent months, with new trade data showing Russia has become the country’s main external supplier of the fuel. According to Brasil 247, a partner of TV BRICS, the growth reflects the strengthening of energy trade relations and Brazil’s efforts to ensure stable supplies for the domestic market.

According to figures from Brazil’s Comex Stat foreign trade system, operated by the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services, the country imported US$1.76 billion worth of diesel in March and April 2026. More than US$1.43 billion of this volume came from Russia, representing over 81 per cent of total imports during the two-month period.

In April alone, Brazil imported approximately US$924 million worth of diesel from Russia, accounting for nearly 90 per cent of monthly diesel imports.

Trade figures also show steady growth in Brazilian purchases of Russian diesel throughout the year. Imports totalled US$433 million in February, increased to more than US$505 million in March, and continued rising in April.

Brazilian authorities have simultaneously introduced a series of measures aimed at supporting fuel affordability and maintaining market stability. According to government estimates, the tax adjustments and support mechanisms are expected to lower diesel prices at refineries and contribute to additional reductions for consumers.

Additional support measures were introduced for domestically produced diesel, with authorities emphasising that the benefits should be reflected in final consumer prices.
