South Africa’s agricultural exports rise 11% in first quarter of 2026

South Africa’s agricultural sector recorded a robust start to 2026, with export earnings increasing by 11 per cent year-on-year during the first quarter, reports African News Agency (ANA), a TV BRICS partner.

According to newly released industry data, agricultural exports reached US$3.7 billion between January and March, reflecting strong global demand for South African produce despite continued uncertainty in international markets and persistent infrastructure constraints.

Fresh fruit, grains, sugar, nuts, fruit juices, and other high-value agricultural products were among the leading contributors to export growth. Strong performances across multiple commodity groups helped strengthen the sector’s overall resilience and supported foreign exchange earnings.

Africa remained South Africa’s largest agricultural export destination, accounting for 44 per cent of total export value during the first quarter. Key products shipped to neighbouring and regional markets included maize, apples, pears, sugar, vegetable oils, fruit juices, and wine, underscoring the importance of intra-African trade for the country’s agricultural economy.

Industry experts note that export growth not only generates valuable foreign currency revenues but also supports employment, stimulates investment across agricultural value chains, and contributes to the development of rural communities.

Government officials have described the latest results as evidence of the competitiveness and adaptability of South African agriculture. They emphasise that further gains could be achieved through enhanced infrastructure, expanded market access, greater investment certainty, and strengthened support for producers across the sector.
