South Africa’s Cape Town Opera Chorus performs in China
The award-winning Cape Town Opera Choir from South Africa performed a concert of African choral music called Horizons in Beijing’s Temple of Heaven as part of the 27th Beijing Music Festival. The concert, featuring choral music, took place within the historic setting of the 600-year-old Divine Music Administration. This is reported by China Daily, a partner of TV BRICS.
Under the direction of conductor and pianist Jose Dias, the ensemble transitioned smoothly from bel canto to the transparency of sacred music and the earthiness of jazz, captivating the audience with a journey through the vast landscape of South African choral music. This vibrant and inspiring genre blends traditional African rhythms and harmonies with contemporary gospel influences.
The programme showcased seven of South Africa’s 12 official languages, highlighting the nation’s rich vocal heritage, as noted by Magdalene Minnaar, Artistic Director of Cape Town Opera.
