Lyudmila Khokhlova, Associate Professor of Indian Philology at Lomonosov Moscow State University: “Receiving Padma Shri award – great honour for all Russian Indology”
The Padma Shri is India’s fourth-highest civilian award. Since it was established in 1954, fewer than ten Russian scholars have received it. In 2026, linguist Lyudmila Khokhlova joined that list. India recognised her decades of work on Hindi, Punjabi, and Gujarati, as well as her role in strengthening cultural and academic ties between Russia and India.
Can you still make unexpected discoveries in a language that’s already been studied in depth? And what doors can the study of Indian languages open?
Lyudmila Khokhlova, Associate Professor in the Department of Indian Philology at the Institute of Asian and African Studies, Lomonosov Moscow State University, answers these and other questions in a BRICSterview.
