Brazil concludes preparatory stage for BRICS Sports Ministers Meeting

It ended with the drafting of a memorandum of understanding

The preparatory cycle for the meeting of BRICS sports ministers, which will take place in Brasilia, has been completed. This is reported by the official website of the Brazilian Government.

Over the course of six days, experts and technical representatives from BRICS countries held a series of three hybrid meetings – both in person and online – with the aim of developing a draft memorandum of understanding (MoU) in the field of sport.

This MoU is intended to serve as the basis for future agreements on cooperation in the field of sport within the group. It identifies key areas such as technical exchange, joint sporting events, capacity building, investment in sports infrastructure and knowledge sharing.

Fabio Araujo, the Brazilian Ministry's National Secretary for Paralympic Sport and Head of the Working Group tasked with preparing the draft document, said that the goal had been successfully achieved. He emphasised the importance of this milestone during Brazil's BRICS presidency, noting that all member states had reached consensus on the content of the draft.

"This was exactly the result we wanted to achieve during Brazil's presidency of BRICS. We are very pleased that we have reached a common understanding among all members. The agreed text will serve as the basis for future cooperation instruments," Araujo said.

He also acknowledged the complexity of the negotiation process, noting the difficulty of reconciling the different points of view and sensitive issues of all five member countries to create a unified and balanced document.

The final version of the Memorandum of Understanding will be officially signed by the sports ministers of the BRICS countries on 4 June.
