Brazil tops Boxing World Cup opener with dominant nine-medal haul

Brazil took first place in the medal standings with four gold and five silver medals in Foz do Iguacu at the opening stage of the World Boxing Cup. According to Agência Brasil, the result placed the host nation ahead of China and Kazakhstan in a tournament that brought together competitors from 50 countries.

The outcome marks a clear improvement on last year’s campaign, when Brazil finished second overall. This time, the team converted final appearances into titles, with four of nine finalists stepping onto the top of the podium.

In the men’s events, Luiz Oliveira secured gold in the under-60 kg division. In turn, Yuri Falcao followed with a win in the 65 kg category. Two further titles came via unanimous decisions. Wanderley Pereira triumphed in the 80 kg final, while Isaias Filho claimed gold in the 90 kg division.

Brazil also collected five silver medals. In the men’s categories, Kaue Belini finished runner-up in the 85 kg division, while Kaian Reis and Thauan Silva secured second place in the 70 kg and 75 kg categories, respectively.

In the women’s competition, reigning world champion Rebeca Lima took silver in the 60 kg division, while Barbara Santos finished second in the 75 kg category after a closely contested final.

Experts highlighted that the tournament, held for the second consecutive year in Foz do Iguacu, set a participation record with more than 400 boxers competing – the highest number ever recorded for a single stage of the event.

Attention now turns to the next stage of the series, scheduled for June in Guiyang, China, with the season set to culminate in the final tournament in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, later this year.
