Addis Ababa has become the first city in Africa to host the City Mountain Bike Eliminator Pro League, marking a major milestone for the continent’s international cycling scene, reports Fana Media Corporation (FMC), a partner of TV BRICS.

The competition brought together professional riders from more than 24 countries, reinforcing Ethiopia’s growing status as a destination for global sporting events.

According to Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abiebie, the tournament was the third major international sporting event hosted by the Ethiopian capital within just two weeks, highlighting the city’s expanding role in international sports diplomacy and event tourism.

The Mayor praised the Union Cycliste Internationale for selecting Addis Ababa as the venue for the continental-level competition, describing the decision as a sign of growing international confidence in the city’s organisational and sporting infrastructure.

Officials say the event forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Ethiopia’s position in global sport, promote international engagement and develop the country’s profile in cycling and outdoor competitions.

The race also showcased Addis Ababa’s ambition to become a leading African centre for international sporting events, combining urban sports infrastructure with cultural and historical landmarks.

City authorities confirmed that preparations are already underway to host similar international competitions in the coming years as Ethiopia continues investing in sports tourism and youth-focused athletic development.
