Global South leadership shapes G20 agenda on equity and inclusive global growth

CSIS researcher says South Africa’s chairmanship continues a four-year push to advance developing countries’ priorities

In an exclusive commentary for TVRI, a partner of TV BRICS, Shafiah Muhibat, Deputy Executive Director for Research at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), highlighted that the upcoming G20 summit in Johannesburg is set to maintain a strong focus on equity and sustainable development. She noted that promoting greater economic stability has long been central to the G20’s work, with multiple working groups advancing initiatives aimed at expanding opportunities, reducing inequality and supporting more inclusive global growth.

Muhibat emphasised that climate change remains a key issue for many member states, underpinning the need for coordinated action that reflects the concerns of both developed and developing countries. She pointed out that this year’s chairmanship is particularly significant, as South Africa is the fourth consecutive Global South country to lead the G20 – following Indonesia, India, and Brazil. This series, she said, illustrates a sustained effort by developing nations to ensure that their priorities are fully embedded in the G20’s agenda.

She added that the Sustainable Development Goals remain a central pillar of the summit’s work. With the G20 representing around 85 per cent of global GDP, decisions taken within the group have the potential to energise global economic cooperation. According to Muhibat, the emphasis on translating SDG principles into practical initiatives highlights the G20’s ability to support meaningful, shared progress across a wide range of development priorities.

The TV BRICS International Media Network is an officially accredited media outlet at the G20 summit in Johannesburg, which will take place this year on 22–23 November.
