This dynamic is driven by the increasing number of internet users in the country
India has recorded a 21 per cent increase in power consumption by data centres in the first half of 2024, from 778 megawatts (MW) in the same period of 2023 to nearly 942 MW. This is reported by IANS, a partner of TV BRICS.
IT capacity deals of around 200 MW have been recorded in the market in six months, analysts said. This is expected to rise to around 400 MW by the end of this year.
Experts found that power demand from data centres is driven by growth in the banking, financial services and insurance sectors.
"We project a strong demand for data centre capacity in India by the end of 2024, with an estimated requirement of 400 MW across major cities,” said Srihari Srinivasan, data centre services specialist.
Among the market-leading cities, Mumbai tops the list with 54.9 per cent of the total capacity, followed by Chennai (12.3 per cent), Bangalore (8.2 per cent) and Pune (7.2 per cent).
