New trade route links China’s port with South America

The corridor enables western Chinese cities to bypass traditional, more congested routes

A new freight route has been inaugurated linking southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality with Chancay Port in Peru, marking a significant expansion of the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor. This is reported by Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

A cargo train carrying 84 TEUs of complete vehicles departed Chongqing and will travel via the Beibu Gulf Port in Guangxi, before the goods are transferred to an ocean-going vessel bound for South America.

This is the first time the trade corridor has extended its reach to Chancay, a milestone for the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and a new chapter in China’s growing connectivity with global markets, according to the mentioned source.

The corridor enables western Chinese cities like Chongqing to bypass traditional, more congested routes by combining rail and sea transport. Chancay Port, a deep-water terminal and flagship BRI project in Peru, is also South America’s first smart and eco-friendly harbour, reducing shipping times between the continent and Asia from around 35 days to just 25.
