Saudi Arabia announces adoption of Road Code

The Kingdom is moving to the forefront of countries actively using modern technology in infrastructure development

The Saudi Arabian The Roads General Authority, in a press release, announced an important step towards modernising road infrastructure – the adoption of the Road Code.

This code implies the harmonisation of standards and policies in the road sector, as well as opening up prospects for the integration of unmanned vehicles by setting clear requirements for their operation. This is reported by Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

According to the press release provided, the Road Code aims to improve the quality and safety of road surfaces, as well as economic efficiency and sustainability.

In particular, it emphasises infrastructure for autonomous driving. The Code requires the installation of smart communication devices along roads that will enable interaction with unmanned vehicles through advanced networks, providing real-time traffic data. This will help make safer decisions behind the wheel and improve traffic flow.

The code will also be the main technical guidance for all road authorities in the country, providing the necessary information for effective planning, design, construction and maintenance of roads. It takes into account environmental aspects and the specific needs of unmanned vehicles.

Including recommendations, drawings, procedures and checklists, the code aims to ensure optimal quality, safety and economic sustainability throughout the Kingdom.

The Road Code is currently undergoing testing, which will be finalised at the end of 2024. From the beginning of 2025, its provisions will become mandatory for all public institutions.
