Argentina elects a new president

With the majority of votes counted, Javier Milei won the second round of the election

The candidate of the Freedom Advances party (La Libertad Avanza) won 55.98 per cent of the vote, compared to 44.04 per cent for the candidate of the Union for the Homeland party (Unión por la Patria), Sergio Massa.

La Libertad Avanza (LLA) presidential candidate Javier Milei has soundly defeated Union for the Homeland candidate Sergio Massa in the second round of Argentina's national elections to become head of state for the next four years. This is reported by Extra!, a partner of TV BRICS.

According to official results, with 98 per cent of ballots counted, Milei won 55.76 per cent of the vote, ahead of Economy Minister, Sergio Massa, who got 44.23 per cent.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has congratulated Argentina's President-elect Javier Milieu and said democracy must be respected in the neighbouring country.

"Democracy is the voice of the people and should always be respected. My congratulations to the Argentine institutions responsible for the electoral process and to the Argentine people who participated in the electoral process. I wish the new Government good luck and success. Argentina is a great country. Brazil is always ready to work together with our Argentine brothers," Lula said in a statement on social media.

In 2021, he was elected national deputy for the first time. Millei will assume the presidency on 10 December, with Victoria Villarruel taking over as vice president.
