Chinese researchers aim to conserve coral reefs

For more than a decade, a team of Chinese marine scientists has been actively engaged in biodiversity conservation by diving to the ocean floor and implementing coral reef restoration projects

A team of Chinese marine scientists has been actively engaged in biodiversity conservation by diving to the ocean floor and implementing coral reef restoration projects.

Corals are among the most difficult marine organisms to reproduce, but they play a key role in shaping the marine ecosystem, as about 25 per cent of marine life depends on coral reefs. This is reported nay CCTV+, a partner of TV BRICS.

Zhu Ming, Deputy Director of the Ecology Institute of Guangdong Ocean University Shenzhen Research Institute in south China's Guangdong Province, estimates that coral reefs around the world are threatened by the effects of climate change and human activity, making the protection and restoration of these ecosystems paramount.

Over the years, Zhu and his team have made significant progress in researching coral seedling technology and implementing seabed restoration projects. They are largely spearheading the ecological restoration of coral in the country.

On the seabed, the team uses special mechanisms to anchor the base for coral growth on a grid, which aids in their development.

Zhu also trains students at the coral breeding centre, teaching them modern methods of planting coral seedlings. Each new method becomes a step forward in coral conservation.
