Ethiopia and UN reaffirm commitment to accelerate sustainable development goals

High-level meeting emphasises collaboration and regional expertise to advance Ethiopia’s development agenda

Ethiopia’s Minister of Finance, Ahmed Shide, and United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohammed, have reaffirmed their joint commitment to accelerating the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at a national level.

During a high-level meeting, Minister Ahmed Shide outlined Ethiopia’s strategies to enhance SDG delivery, highlighting the critical need for strengthened coordination. This is reported by ENA, a partner of TV BRICS.

Both officials emphasised the importance of aligning SDG initiatives with Ethiopia’s local development priorities, with collaboration between the Ethiopian Government, the UN Country Team (UNCT), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), and the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office playing a pivotal role.

The discussions underscored the need to leverage UNECA’s regional expertise while defining clear roles and responsibilities for better partnership outcomes. Enhancing the operational efficiency of the UN system in Ethiopia was also identified as key to achieving impactful development results.

Ahmed Shide also provided updates on Ethiopia’s ongoing macroeconomic reforms and preparations for the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development.

Sides also pledged to explore innovative avenues for stronger cooperation in mutually beneficial areas.
