Indonesia develops domestic production of medicines to improve health care sustainability

In collaboration with the Ministry of Industry, the Ministry of Health is advocating for the local production of 22 key drug raw materials

Indonesia is intensifying efforts to achieve pharmaceutical self-reliance by promoting the production of medicines from natural raw materials. This is reported by ANTARA News Agency.

Lucia Rizka Andalucia, Director General for Pharmaceutical and Medical Devices in Ministry of Health Republic Indonesia, outlined the government’s comprehensive approach, focusing on research and development, production, and market guarantees. She emphasised that these efforts aim to establish domestic production capabilities for drug raw materials.

The new research and development programme prioritises transitioning to alternative, locally sourced raw materials for drug production. From 2022 to 2024, the ministry facilitated this shift for 42 pharmaceutical companies.

On the production front, the government has introduced a range of incentives for pharmaceutical companies engaged in domestic research, innovation, and the use of local raw materials. This initiative has already resulted in domestic development of several essential drug components, the source claims.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Industry, the Ministry of Health is advocating for the local production of 22 key drug raw materials, aligning with new import trade regulations.

These efforts are part of a broader vision to strengthen Indonesia’s health system and ensure the availability of high-quality, locally produced medicines.
