World Wrestler of Year 2025 shortlists five Iranian athletes

Half of all global nominees come from Iran, underscoring the national team's continued dominance in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling

Five Iranian wrestlers have been shortlisted for the World Wrestler of the Year 2025 title, according to the latest announcement from the international governing body for the sport. The list includes athletes in both freestyle and Greco-Roman categories, highlighting Iran’s strong competitive standing on the global stage.

In freestyle wrestling, Rahman Amouzad (65 kg) and Amir Hossein Zare (125 kg) were named among the contenders. They will compete for the top honour alongside leading athletes from other wrestling nations. This is reported by Pars Today, a partner of TV BRICS.

In Greco-Roman events, Saeed Esmaeili (67 kg), Gholamreza Farkhi (82 kg) and Mohammadhadi Saravi (97 kg) secured places on the final shortlist. Their selection reflects strong international performances over the past season, experts claimed.

Among the ten total nominees announced, five are Iranian, representing 50 per cent of all finalists. This proportion marks one of the highest nomination shares held by any country and reinforces Iran’s longstanding reputation as a powerhouse in both disciplines of the sport.
