Chinese scientists develop advanced solid electrolyte interphase

The innovation is poised to drive technological advancements in next-generation energy storage

A team of Chinese researchers has achieved a milestone in lithium metal battery development, constructing an optimal solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on lithium metal anodes. This is reported by Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

This advanced SEI demonstrates electronic insulation, ionic conductivity, and chemical stability, addressing critical challenges in lithium metal battery performance and safety. According to the researchers, the innovation is poised to drive technological advancements in next-generation energy storage, including applications in new energy vehicles and photovoltaic-storage systems.

The research team incorporates monoclinic m-Li₂ZrF₆ nanoparticles as additives, resulting in a solid electrolyte interphase with outstanding electrochemical properties. Their breakthrough enables lithium metal batteries to retain 80 per cent of their capacity after 3,000 cycles at a 2C charging rate that is a record achievement in the field.

The simplicity and scalability of the m-Li₂ZrF₆ nanoparticle synthesis process make it a practical solution for the mass production of lithium metal batteries, paving the way for their widespread adoption. This breakthrough is expected to accelerate progress in the energy storage sector, enhancing the capabilities of electric vehicles and renewable energy systems.
