Mass training for unemployed to be extended in South Africa

The National Development Plan (NDP) aims to create 11 million new jobs by 2030

South Africa's Department of Employment and Labour will extend the Unemployment Insurance Fund's (UIF) Labour Activation Programme (LAP), set up to train those without permanent jobs, to several provinces.

According to Thulas Nxesi, South Africa is in the middle of an ever-changing technological era and this requires adaptation.

As such, he said, there was a need for large-scale training to ensure that the unemployed have a variety of skills and can adapt to the ever-changing world of technology. This is reported by Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS.

Nxesi announced last week that the Department of Employment and Labour, through the LAP FIU, had launched a R23.8 billion (about US$1.26 billion) programme to fund an employment and entrepreneurship training programme.

For her part, Small Enterprise Development Minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams said the National Development Plan (NDP) envisages the creation of 11 million new jobs by 2030, most of which should come from small and medium enterprises.
