BRICS: in the Mirror of Times. How did the USSR help in the fight against apartheid in South Africa
On 27 April 1994, the first free elections were held in South Africa. Shortly before that, diplomatic relations were restored between our country and South Africa. And Moscow was visited by the president of the republic for the first time. All this took place against the backdrop of the gradual abandonment of the apartheid regime in South Africa.
What role did the USSR and then Russia play in this complex process? How was it possible to avoid large-scale bloodshed at the turn of the eras in South Africa? And what is the Nelson Mandela phenomenon?
We will talk about this and more in the studio of the "BRICS: In the Mirror of Times" project with Aleksandr Voevodsky, Associate Professor at the School of Historical Sciences of the Higher School of Economics, Senior Researcher at the Centre for African Studies of the Institute of General History of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The joint TV BRICS and GAUGN project received grant support from the Russian Ministry of Education and Science under the federal project "Popularisation of Science and Technology".
