BRICS expansion signals growing interest from Global South

Expert highlights new partnerships and inclusive global cooperation

The TV BRICS International Media Network presents a special project for the 20th anniversary of BRICS: “Global Media Briefing.” Expert commentary from representatives of the leading media of BRICS+ countries, partners of the media network, covers issues of shaping a unified global agenda, building a multipolar system of global media communications, current trends and key events of the past 20 years for the development of media discourse, and forecasts for the further evolution of the media landscape.

In an exclusive interview with TV BRICS, R. Muthu Kumar, Editor of the Trinity Mirror (English) and Makkal Kural (Tamil) newspapers, and Founder of the non-profit organisation BRICS Generation, emphasised the significance of BRICS’ 20th anniversary as a platform for global cooperation.

Muthu Kumar underlined that over the past two decades, BRICS has grown from an economic idea into one of the most important voices of the Global South. He noted that nearly 40 countries have expressed interest in joining BRICS.

“The expansion of membership and partnerships across Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America shows that many nations want a more inclusive and balanced global order,” Muthu Kumar explained. He stressed that this growth signals a shift towards plurality, inclusivity, and shared decision-making on global issues.

He also mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly emphasised, the countries of the Global South must stand together and claim a stronger voice in shaping global outcomes.

Highlighting India’s perspective, Muthu Kumar noted that BRICS is not merely a diplomatic forum. For India, it represents both a strategic and civilisational opportunity, offering avenues to strengthen partnerships along vital trade routes and energy corridors.

In his interview, he also emphasised the role of media in supporting BRICS cooperation, citing platforms like TV BRICS that foster dialogue and people-to-people connections among member nations. According to the expert, such communication helps emerging economies coordinate their positions and contribute effectively to global governance reforms, including at the United Nations.

In conclusion, Muthu Kumar highlighted that as BRICS celebrates 20 years, its expanded membership and new partnerships send a clear message: the world is moving towards a more collaborative order, where nations of the Global South have a stronger voice and shared responsibility in shaping global outcomes.
