BRICS presents updated emissions targets and native vegetation restoration strategy

The BRICS delegations collectively endorsed a series of new climate cooperation frameworks

In a high-level meeting held in Brasilia, representatives of the BRICS countries convened to strengthen cooperation on climate change and sustainable development. The session was part of the BRICS Contact Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development, established to advance collective action towards an inclusive, low-carbon global future. This is reported by the official website of Brazil's Ministries of Environment and Climate Change.

According to the source, Brazil now pledges to cut net greenhouse gas emissions by 59 per cent to 67 per cent by 2035 compared to 2005 levels, aiming for absolute emissions between 850 million and 1.05 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent.

To achieve these targets, Brazil is prioritising native vegetation restoration. Expert explained that the strategy includes reclaiming degraded pasturelands and other areas, with the long-term goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 through ecosystem recovery.

The BRICS delegations collectively endorsed a series of new climate cooperation frameworks, including:

  • The Climate Leadership Agenda, to support the full implementation of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change;

  • The Report on Intellectual Property Options, aimed at enhancing climate technology transfer among member states;

  • The Principles for Fair, Inclusive, and Transparent Carbon Accounting, contributing to balanced development of international standards and methodologies;

  • Recognition of carbon markets as vital instruments for accelerating climate action.

As part of Brazil’s 2025 BRICS presidency under the theme "Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance", climate leadership remains a top priority alongside broader economic, social, and environmental development goals.
