China reports steady growth in protected wildlife and plant species

Over 80 per cent of nationally protected terrestrial species effectively conserved as habitat quality improves

China has achieved effective conservation of more than 80 per cent of its nationally protected wild terrestrial animal and plant species, as the country records sustained improvements in ecological conditions, as reported by Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

According to the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, overall populations of wild fauna and flora are continuing to rise, supported by enhanced habitat protection and ecological restoration efforts.

Monitoring data show that flagship species such as the Giant panda, Snow leopard and Siberian tiger have maintained stable population growth in the wild.

Endangered plant species have also demonstrated notable recovery. The number of Abies beshanzuensis in the wild has surpassed 4,000 individuals, while Manglietiastrum sinicum has reached 15,000. The population of Paphiopedilum purpuratum has increased to more than 200 individuals.

Looking ahead to the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026–2030), the administration said it will roll out a new package of major wildlife conservation projects. Plans also include strengthening international cooperation on giant panda conservation and ensuring compliance with global wildlife protection treaties, with the aim of promoting high-quality development in China’s biodiversity conservation sector.

The BRICS countries are also actively striving to preserve biodiversity and improve the ecological environment of wild flora and fauna.

For example, the government of Kazakhstan has adopted the “Concept for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity for 2026-2030”. This document will serve as the basis for planning measures aimed at increasing the country’s forest cover, protecting forests from fires, promoting the sustainable use of resources and improving flora and fauna monitoring systems. As noted by Kazinform, a partner of TV BRICS, this new concept provides a platform for establishing new domestic and international partnerships.

The Indonesian Ministry of Forestry has announced the launch of a comprehensive forest restoration programme in Tesso Nilo National Park. The project aims to restore 66,704 hectares of degraded land in central Sumatran. According to ANTARA, this initiative is part of a broader Indonesian forest restoration strategy that aims to restore forests damaged by land use changes, particularly the expansion of oil palm plantations. The first phase involves restoring 2,574 hectares of forest by 2026 and 66,704 hectares by 2028.

Brazil has also launched a plan to restore 15,000 hectares of degraded Atlantic Forest. According to Brazil 247, a partner of TV BRICS, the restoration work will be conducted in permanently protected areas, legally protected areas and other voluntarily protected areas in accordance with the Forest Law and the Atlantic Forest Law. All trees planted will be native species in order to restore habitats, connect forest fragments, and promote the return of wildlife.
