Vietnam advances plans for low-emission zones to combat urban pollution

This initiative is aimed at preserving the health and well-being of residents

The Vietnamese capital Hanoi has taken a decisive step toward addressing its pressing air pollution issues by approving a resolution to establish low-emission zones, as reported by Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS.

This initiative, spearheaded by the Hanoi People’s Council, aligns with the city’s master plan through 2030, with a forward-looking vision extending to 2050.

The criteria for these zones include areas with significant environmental protection measures and restricted emissions. District-level committees will tailor proposals based on local conditions, restricting access within these zones to priority vehicles or those meeting emission standards set by the authorities.

Pilot programmes are slated to begin between 2025 and 2030, with broader implementation anticipated from 2031.

Under the new framework, temporary bans or restrictions may apply to vehicles failing to meet Euro emission standards. Additionally, the city plans to support residents and organisations transitioning to environmentally friendly vehicles and to invest in clean-energy transport infrastructure.

By adopting these measures, Hanoi aims to not only reduce its environmental footprint but also safeguard the health and well-being of its residents.
